Gib Lewis Unit Release Routes

Gib Lewis Unit, code GL, is a Texas Department of Criminal Justice Correctional Institutions Division prison. It is not operated by Tyler County. Men may leave Lewis through an internal TDCJ transfer, hospital movement, parole, discretionary mandatory supervision, or full discharge. Each route creates a different status and requires a state record.

An internal transfer changes the unit but does not end TDCJ custody. Parole permits a person to serve the rest of a sentence under community supervision after a Board decision. Mandatory supervision is another supervised release path governed by eligibility and review rules. Discharge means the sentence obligation has ended. A completed release record must be distinguished from a future projected date and from a Board vote that still requires processing.

Search Gib Lewis Unit Records

The TDCJ Online Inmate Search is the correct first stop for a person who may still be imprisoned. Search by TDCJ number or SID number when known. A name search requires the exact last name and at least the first initial, with gender and race available to narrow results. Open the detail and compare identity, location, conviction data, projected release date, and parole-review information.

1. Start with a TDCJ or SID number when possible; otherwise use the exact last name and first initial.
2. Confirm that the result belongs to the right person and read the current unit.
3. Treat “Projected Release Date” as a conditional calculation, not a completed event.
4. Read any later “Scheduled Release date” and “Scheduled Release location” as plans that can change.
5. For a past event, request the official incarceration, release, and discharge history.

No result does not prove discharge. It can reflect release, delayed data, an identifier error, or movement beyond that search's scope. Confirm identifiers through TDCJ's telephone or no-charge email channels, check state IVSS, and use a Public Information Act request for the historical record.

Gib Lewis Unit Release Dates

TDCJ defines a projected release date as the date Classification and Records calculates for a person to leave incarceration if parole does not happen first. Offense title, offense date, sentence structure, flat time, good conduct time, mandatory-supervision rules, and Board action may affect it. The field is not a guarantee.

A scheduled date comes later. After a favorable Board vote, Review and Release Processing issues a release certificate contingent on an approved residence. Classification and Records then audits the case and calculates the scheduled date. TDCJ warns that the planned date and location may change even on the scheduled day because residence approval, programming, audits, transport, court action, or a detainer remains unresolved.

Projected release date

A conditional TDCJ calculation, often before final release processing.

Scheduled release date

A later planned processing date that can still change.

Parole

Board-approved release to serve the rest of a sentence under TDCJ supervision.

Discharge

The end of the sentence obligation, distinct from parole release.

Gib Lewis Unit IVSS Alerts

TDCJ prison and parole notification uses the separate state IVSS portal at ivss.tdcj.texas.gov. It is distinct from IVSS-Counties, which serves county custody and court events. A registration tied to Tyler County Jail should not be assumed to follow a person after transfer to Lewis.

Search the selected state record, verify identifiers, and register for the available custody, release, discharge, parole, or mandatory-supervision notices. Keep contact preferences current. A notice is useful evidence of a change, but a historical TDCJ release record is stronger when an exact date, release type, or discharge status matters.

Federal and immigration notification systems are also separate. Neither belongs to a Gib Lewis Unit release unless another record shows that custody moved to that authority.

Gib Lewis Unit Parole Route

The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles decides parole and relevant mandatory-supervision matters. TDCJ Parole Division supervises people released from state prison. A favorable FI vote or another approval code is a decision, not proof that the prison gate has opened. Programming, an approved residence, the release certificate, record audit, transport, or a detainer can still delay community release.

When a person released from Lewis resides in Tyler County, the official TDCJ county cross-reference maps Tyler County to Beaumont District Parole Office, Region I. It does not map the county to the similarly named Tyler DPO. This state route is also separate from Tyler County Adult Probation, which handles court-ordered local community supervision.

Gib Lewis Unit Discharge Records

The unit telephone is appropriate for facility information, but the warden's office is not the central custodian for a historical statewide incarceration record. TDCJ divides the work. Classification and Records handles time calculations; Review and Release Processing handles post-vote release steps; Parole Division handles supervision; and the Office of General Counsel receives Public Information Act requests.

1. Provide the full name and TDCJ or SID number. If those are unavailable, give the exact date of birth.
2. State a clear date range and ask for public incarceration, release, and discharge history.
3. Identify the specific release date/type, discharge or expiration date, and public face-sheet or time-calculation fields needed.
4. Submit through the online PIA form, email PIA@tdcj.texas.gov, or mail TDCJ Public Information Request, P.O. Box 4017, Huntsville, TX 77342.
5. Compare the response with the sentencing court judgment and parole record.

TDCJ's no-charge offender-information email route can provide a TDCJ number, location, conviction offense, incarceration history with county and court, current incarceration, and projected release date when required identifiers are supplied. It expressly does not provide photographs or Social Security numbers. Use the PIA route for a targeted historical record.

Gib Lewis Unit Programs

The official unit directory lists CHANGES/Pre-Release and Reentry Planning. These are in-prison preparation programs. Their presence shows that release planning is part of the unit's program mix, but it does not prove that any named person took part, completed a program, earned release, or received a benefit after leaving.

Gib Lewis Unit Profile

Lewis is a male state prison one mile east of Woodville off Highway 190 on FM 3497. TDCJ lists an August 1990 establishment date, a capacity of 2,380, custody levels G1 through G5, and security detention. Those facts describe the institution. They do not show current population or predict one person's release.

The scale contrast matters in Tyler County. The state prison's listed capacity is far larger than the 43-person county jail capacity, yet geographic proximity does not merge their records. Lewis releases belong to TDCJ. Tyler County Jail releases belong to the Sheriff and local courts.

Do not ask Tyler County Sheriff staff to certify a Lewis release merely because both facilities are in the same county. The correct custodian follows the authority that held the person.
